Description

Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joes with Creamy Cheese Sauce are spicy, savory, and indulgent. Ground chicken cooked with Cajun spices is topped with a rich, cheesy sauce and served on toasted brioche buns, perfect for a bold weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Cajun seasoning (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • ½ cup tomato sauce (canned)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp brown sugar (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • For Creamy Cheese Sauce: 2 tbsp unsalted butter, 2 tbsp all-purpose flour, 1 cup whole milk, 8 oz sharp cheddar or American cheese, ¼ tsp paprika, pinch of salt
  • For Assembly: 4–6 brioche hamburger buns, split and toasted, softened butter, freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; sauté until translucent.
  2. Add ground chicken and cook until browned.
  3. Stir in Cajun seasoning, tomato paste, chicken broth, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and salt. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  4. For the cheese sauce: melt butter in a small saucepan, whisk in flour for 1 min, gradually add milk, then add shredded cheese, paprika, and salt. Stir until smooth.
  5. Spread cheese sauce over the cooked chicken mixture and stir to combine.
  6. Toast brioche buns with butter. Spoon chicken mixture onto buns, top with black pepper, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Adjust Cajun seasoning to your spice preference.
  • Ground turkey or chicken thighs can be used instead of ground chicken.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 2–3 days.
