Ingredients
- 2 slices bread
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup (2 oz) grated cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, or gruyere)
- 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh herbs (thyme or rosemary)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) or heat a skillet over medium heat.
- Lightly toast the bread on one side and place it on a baking sheet or pan.
- Press a small well into the center of each slice and crack the egg into the middle.
- Sprinkle grated cheese evenly over the bread and egg.
- Season with salt, black pepper, herbs, and cayenne if using.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes (or cover and cook in skillet) until the egg is set and cheese is melted.
- Serve warm and enjoy immediately.
