Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup (2 oz) grated cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, or gruyere)
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh herbs (thyme or rosemary)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) or heat a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Lightly toast the bread on one side and place it on a baking sheet or pan.
  3. Press a small well into the center of each slice and crack the egg into the middle.
  4. Sprinkle grated cheese evenly over the bread and egg.
  5. Season with salt, black pepper, herbs, and cayenne if using.
  6. Bake for 10–12 minutes (or cover and cook in skillet) until the egg is set and cheese is melted.
