Description
This Hobo Casserole is a hearty ground beef recipe layered with tender potatoes, a creamy mushroom sauce, and plenty of melted cheddar cheese. Perfect for an easy family dinner or potluck dish.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ยฝ teaspoon black pepper
- 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
- ยฝ cup milk
- 1 ยฝ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- ยฝ teaspoon paprika (optional, for garnish)
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with melted butter.
- In a skillet, cook the ground beef and chopped onion over medium heat until beef is browned and onion is soft. Drain excess fat.
- Season beef mixture with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- In a small bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Spread half of the beef mixture on top, followed by half of the soup mixture. Sprinkle with ยฝ of the shredded cheddar cheese.
- Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef mixture, soup mixture, and cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15โ20 minutes, until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden and bubbly.
- Sprinkle paprika on top for garnish before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add sliced mushrooms or bell peppers between layers.
- You can substitute cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken or celery soup.
- This casserole can be prepared ahead and refrigerated, then baked when ready to serve.
